In the news ...

Hey Kids!

A few things to note:
  • Plug In - This event formally known as DNOW is quickly approaching and I want to make sure you know about it. The dates are January 25-27; mark your calendars to help out that weekend. We are expecting a large turnout and need leaders to be in the homes for small groups. We have a guest speaker for Friday and Saturday night from K.C. MO. We also still need host homes so talk amongst the peeps you know and see if we can add to that number. I know our services are now on Sunday nights, but we will not have service that Sunday night of the 27th.
  • AMPED Leaders Christmas Party - December 14th. you should have rec'd an e-vite, but if not let me know. We will provide the place and the food. Bring yourself, your spouse, a dessert, and a $14.99 max gift for some Chinese game where you fight for the present you want, maybe arm wrestling? Nah, I'd lose 4 sure. Just know that someone smarter than me put this together and it will be loads of fun.
  • Sunday Night December 16 - NO AMPED service. This will be the Gateway staff Christmas party and we won't have anyone to open the building, so relax on this night. And if you can, invite James to help you do some work around the house so he can get out of going to the Nutcracker.
  • Sunday Night December 23 - AMPED student Christmas Party. Yes, I am aware of the date, but since we won't have service the week before and the week after, we want a chance to have fun and celebrate with the kids before 2008 gets here. Come have some fun with us and let me know if you can make it.
  • Champions for India is still going on. 8th grade is having a little trouble, cheer on your local 8th grader.
  • Volunteers during the week - adults or leaders, if you have some free time during the day we want to put your hands to good work. Don't worry, you won't pull your back or even break a sweat. Let me or Britt know if you can help or if you know someone who can.
  • Oh, and the AMPED website is coming along! Right now we just have a splash page but a full site is coming real soon, I can taste it!
  • Event for battered women and their children - I am still gathering information for this but this is a great way to show our community that has had difficult times the love of Jesus - with no strings attached! We will join Global Ministries, Seven, and MOR on Saturday, December 15, from about 8:30 AM till about 12:30 PM at the NRH campus. There will be several hundred moms and their kids there and we want to bless them and have a good time while we are at it. Rumor has it that Santa will parachute in ... For this event, we need everyone over the age of 14 to fill out a new background check asap. Email me and I will send it to you so we can have it ready for the event.
  • January 6 - No AMPED Service. We are taking this time as a church to slow down and seek the LORD for direction; fasting and praying and focusing on hearing Him. Slow down and go to the First conference.

There you go, peeps, that's the news. Know that we are praying for you guys this season and if you need anything, please let us know.

Wednesday, November 28, 2007

Hey hey hey

Wassup kids! Hopefully someone will see this. I know it has been too long but getting into NRH and then leaving town for a week has ruined my regular time. Anyway, I wish to give you a few things to ponder.

I still haven't heard from Elizabeth about the biggest loser, but I'm ready! Kam, are you ready for some training? Amy's aunt in Chillicothe told us about this website last week. It seems like it can help so I'm gonna try it. Supposedly it will help you with everything from recipes to how much calories you should take in a day to how long you should work out each day. I haven't done it yet but you should be able to put in your stats, how much you wanna lose by a certain amount of time and it will calculate everything for you. But you have to be religious about imputing your info each day. Elizabeth, you give me the word and I will go get a scale!

Next, I am going to start a media fast starting the first of December and I encourage each of you to do the same. That is this Saturday and I will go for one month. I know I tried to explain this to you guys, but I am certain that if we do this, it will give us clarity and purpose. 1 Peter 4:7 says, " The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray." That is us. We are doing the media fast so we can be clear minded and we are also doing the biggest loser as a front to create discipline in our lives which creates a level of self control.

So just what is a media fast? For me it means no internet at home, only 5 hours of tv a week, no movies, and no secular music. I will still play games with the kids at NRH to build relationships. but the time I would usually spend watching tv or surfing the net, I will spend with the Lord or in the Word. The idea is not to just hold back, but to replace those things by drawing nearer to God. Building more relationship with Him.

On that note, I have spent about a month thinking about how we do relationships in AMPED. We love each other (leaders) a lot, but sometimes it becomes difficult to see that transfer to the students. It feels like the process and rules have gotten in the way of actually loving on the kids. Don't get me wrong, our motives for what we do in AMPED are driven by our desire to see the students grow in the Lord, but have we lost perspective? I think so. And it has started with me so I point no fingers. So for the month of December, we will not do access groups. Let's have fun with the kids and play some games with them after service. Let's get involved in follow up and really connect with some of the students. You may be surprised at what you find. We will re-vamp access groups in January with a sharper focus and even include training for all (more on that on a later post). Next year I would like to start some home groups and see if we can get some parents to provide host homes. I would like these groups to function as fusion groups, or interest based groups, which means we could potentially have a flag football group. I think it would be good to have these once a month. I mentioned follow up. Any of you that wants to help out with this just let me know, but we need to follow up with visitors, and our regular students that have missed a couple weeks. Let's make sure we have done our very best to let these students know how valuable they are.

Now I know that as I introduce more stuff some of you are thinking, "More stuff?", but we are getting more people interested in helping out. Just today I have had 5 emails of people interested in helping out in AMPED. Plus, ask James, you can bring lots of people in that you know. Sometimes referrals are the best.

This is a lot of info, and if you have found this new post, please bug every leader you know to come and read it. Text them, email them, call them. And if you have ANY questions, don't hesitate to call or email me. I'd love to spend some time with you and talk about it.

You guys are the best!!

Turkey Day

Hey Kids!

Hope you had a good, no, great Turkey day! I hope you ate until you were sick, cause next week over-eating is no more. At least for us that are doing the biggest loser. While I am actually not competing, I am going with the eating right and exercising stuff. I'm praying I can get rid of this acid reflux stuff with healthier eating.

Amy and I are in Missouri where it's cold. It was snowing yesterday around lunch. It only took us 10 hours to get here on
Tuesday, and we even stopped at Cracker Barrel along the way. Yesterday I had lunch with my friend from college, Chris Shandrow. He is going to come down for Plug In as our gust speaker. He's a good guy, we sat down for 2 1/2 hours and could have gone longer. We haven't seen each other in probably ten years but just picked up right where we left off. Friday we will head an hour north of KC and then down to Branson to see my parents on Saturday. We should be returning home either Monday night or Tuesday morning.

Anyway, where ever you are, who ever you are with this holiday, I hope it's a great one filled with new memories around those that you love.

Can't wait to see you guys next week and hope you have a great service this Sunday night!

word of the day

Hey guys, long time no type. Sorry about that.

Discipline.

Okay, as a general rule, we as a society do not know discipline. We hear the word and tend ot think of when our parents or teachers got on to us when we were kids. I'm talking about the kind of discipline that helps us in our thousands of decisions throughout the day. It tells us that we need to have our quiet time even though we have run out of time in the day and we are worn out and would rather just go to bed. It tells us that we need to do the speed limit even though we are late for work. It tells us that we need to get out of bed even though we didn't go to bed until 3 am. It tells us that we don't need that do-nut even though they smell really good.

I think you know what I'm talking about. Something that we do now that we are adults.

Personally, I am entering a season where discipline is calling my name, and those close to me are on my heart. I feel like challenging people I would otherwise leave alone for the sake of wanting everyone around me to feel good about themselves. I can no longer stand still. I see the clouds in the distance and know that if I don't move now, I will get caught up in the storm. The winds of change are blowing and I wan to be progressive. I want to be pro-active instead of reactive. I want to be ahead of the wave.

I want the Lord to be proud of me (us) because I (we) not only heard His prompting, but responded to His voice.

The weather is changing, and we had better get prepared. I can't wait to share with you guys Sunday night at NRH.

Thanks

So last night went well. I must say we are so blessed to have the people we do, doing what they do, helping us do what we, umm, well you get the point. AMPED leaders are the best. Family. Thanks for coming and having a great time last night (even tho nobody but me and Laura dressed up). Next month will be at Tooley's house so start bugging him now. BTW Rich, its up to you to get the word out and plan it. Enjoy the pics! (well, I tried to upload some pics but blogger is having some technical difficulties, I'll try again later)

It's a Partay! It's for the leaders and it is this Friday the 26th. It's a potluck so remember to sign up to bring something on the website.

So Rich texts me this morning and says, "Do you think we could/should make Friday night a "costume" party?"

And I text back, "okay"

And then he texts, "Wanna put it on the blog?"

And I text,"okay"

So here I am, blogging said text from 9:54 this morning. You can come as Wonderwoman or Scooby-Doo. But whoever you are, it'll be a hoot!

little bit

I just finished typing something about hearing God on my blog and thought of something that ties into the distracted thing.

I can't read lips. Just ask Brittney. She does it to me all the time even though she knows somewhere deep down inside of her that if it hasn't worked for me yet, odds are it won't happen this time either. I don't know if maybe we are really secret agents hidden deep inside Gateway Church so that no one finds us out, and that is why we have the need to talk with such secrecy. If only I knew this secret code she is trying to feed me. Actually it's probably some chick thing. Anyway, When it comes to hearing God, the enemy has got us so distracted, the sound is drowned out. And if you are as dense as I am, it's almost like trying to read lips. Hearing from God clearly is pretty useless at that point. Even if I could read lips, it's not like I can see God to read the elephant shoes He is mouthing. All that to say, get the background noise out of the way and then maybe, just maybe, you can begin to hear His voice and recognize it. Then when someone asks you how to hear God's voice, it will be just like trying to explain to someone how I can hear my wife's voice.

now

Okay, I just got home from AMPED and got cleaned up. I've been thinking about our current series, distracted, and thinking how I get distracted. So many things fight for my attention and if you are a breathing person living in America, chances are there is a war for your attention too. Think about it, what, besides work, gets the large parts of your attention during the day? What to eat for lunch, what music to listen to, the lyrics of said music, getting the car fixed, money, people you need to talk to, updating your blog, maybe a new tv or computer, relationships. Many different things, too many to list here, fight for your attention. One of the things I mentioned was money. As I thought about writing this entry for the blog, I thought, "I hate thinking about money", yet I do it a lot! If I truly hated thinking about money, wouldn't you think I would refrain from it and therefore have faith that the money thing will always be taken care of and leave it in God's hands? But no, I seem to make a decision to worry about it. This is only one example of what we give permission to take up space between our ears, and we don't even charge rent! Quite the opposite, we cater to them like these worries can change anything! Ah, but they can, they can influence your attitude and I believe your health, for the worse. Am I preaching to the choir or confessing?

Luke 12:25-26
25 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not! 26 And if worry can't do little things like that, what's the use of worrying over bigger things? NLT

Lord, help me to give my thoughts and worries to you.

2 Cor 10:4-5
5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.NIV

Col 3:1-2
2 Let heaven fill your thoughts . Do not think only about things down here on earth.NLT

Eph 4:23-24
23 Instead, there must be a spiritual renewal of your thoughts and attitudes. NLT

Radio

By the way, Kam and I will be on the radio tomorrow morning 6-9 on 89.7, Power FM. Don't listen because we will make fools of ourselves and act like big dorks. It will be quite the embarrassment.

A Whole... Nuva... Level

A busy day for the blog, but I want to leave you with a few thoughts.

You need to get this cd. It is by Desperation Band from New Life in Colorado Springs. They recorded this live with their Jr. High, Sr. High and College groups all together. It is simply amazing and I can't bring myself to take it out of my cd player. Get it by paying for it so we can support these guys and a great ministry. You won't regret it.

Last night after I got home from the little birthday thing we did for Chris K., I lay in bed thinking about our leaders and what we do and how to take it to the next level. A couple of things entered my mind:

I want to be more productive with our pre-service meetings. There is no feeling of urgency or "hafta be there". I would love to take it and turn it into a 15-20 min small group session where one of the leaders, not me necessarily, but a rotation of different leaders lead the group with what God has laid on their hearts. I guess I have a need to connect with you guys on a deeper level. It could be great if we come at it with the right expectation and perspective. This is NOT another thing to take up your time. This is a chance to plug into AMPED on a different level and communicate with each other from the heart.

Another thing is, I don't think we do a good job following up on our kids. A girl told me last night that she had been in the hospital all last week because she wanted to kill herself. Wow. I had no idea. Let's do follow up well. "Follow Up" is such a hokey and formal way to describe it. Let's build relationships with kids that extend beyond the weekly service. Start small and be great at it. Take 5 kids, each of us, and touch base and even *gasp* go and do something with them. Duplicate yourself in a Jr. Higher (this duplicate thing will be a reoccurring theme throughout the year). Disciple them. Not in the generic sense, but actually build them, pour into them the things that you wish you would've been taught at their age. You won't, no, cannot and will not be able to regret the time you spend showing Jesus to them outside of the weekly service. I'm not turning this into a formal thing right now because i don't want you to do it begrudgingly. If you say you don't have time then I will ask you to revisit your priorities. This is what we do, who we are, and how we live. We are the crew and a crew knows what it's responsibilities are. Enough preaching.

Know that I appreciate all of the AMPED Leaders. AMPED has the very best leaders anywhere. Let's take this thing to the next level. Get at me and respond.

Loser!

If you were at the leaders retreat (runaway 07), you might remember us talking about the show The Biggest Loser and how it would be cool for us to do it as leaders before camp next year. Elizabeth is putting all of this together and we would like to start when we get into the NRH campus, which is Nov 18th. We have a few people that are willing to be trainers (Kam, Christi) and we can do the weigh in once every two weeks at my house with the same regulated scale. Keep an eye out for more info and if you want to participate, flood Elizabeth with email.

Plug it In

Yesterday I ironed out a few things and had to make some decisions about "The Event Formally Known as DNOW". Just in case you didn't know, our discipleship weekend in January is called Plug In. A few interesting factoids:

January 25-27
Cost for students - $40
Friday night through Sunday morning
Host homes and NRH campus
Guest speaker (possibly guest band too)

I know that last year and even the year before, this event was a catalyst for some adults to get introduced into the system that is AMPED Leadership and then stay permanently plugged in (no pun intended). I would love for that to continue to be the case. Keep in mind we are looking for 08 to be higher attendance and therefore we need more volunteers from host homes to small group leaders to drivers. So go ahead and put this on your calendar and start getting the word out and also begin praying about it!

NRH Official Opening

Okay kids! Here it is! You want it? You got it!

I spoke with some of the Senior team this morning, and the official date we will have the first AMPED service at NRH is November 18th. This is because the AV team does not know they will have everything ready for a service and they are also printing and marketing about opening on the 17/18th. This gives us plenty of time to get in before hand and iron out the details of who will be over what area and how the skate park will operate. So I want to invite you for an orientation on the 11th at 6:00 pm at NRH so I can walk you thru the new building and you can see how everything operates. There you go! You are now in the know!

video podcast #2

We have a new entry on the podcast and I just want to say much thanks to Matt Nelson for helping us with the tech side of things and therefore making it possible. Matt, you are the best!

*** Okay, the new entry is not called #2, it is the video sermon but it is the second video on there. Sorry for the technical um, misrepresentation.

BTW, help us get the word out about that thing, especially with the parents. Tell them to search "amped video" and it should pull it up, or get their email and send them the link. Let them know they can subscribe and it's free!

prepare

A few things of note:

As I'm sure you have checked this out and know when our first service at NRH is, it looks like we will have a halloween service here at the Southlake campus. One of the things I want to do is a human video put to this song. I've done it a couple of times and it is very, what is the word, impactful. However, we will need to tone it down from what I have done in the past. Then we will probably focus that night on how the enemy lies to us.

Core team, we are meeting this Sat the 6th. Bring your thinking caps!

Distracted

The new series for October. Things that distract us from God.

And then just in case you want it, here is the current one:

Administrative Help Needed

Hey gang! I know most of you are busy with school and full-time jobs, but I wanted to let you know that I am in need of some help up here at the office. If any of you have any time during the week or even one random day you just happen to have off and would like to come to the office and lend a hand, it would be incredible! Please email me amped@gatewaypeople.com and let me know if you have any time available. Thank you so much!!

recalibrate

Well, we are looking at the process of AMPED U, and getting the classroom space and how to advertise and all of the fun stuff, it looks like we won't be able to start until Sunday, October 14. Now, this is just for the weekend classes. I think it is imperative we start Drama and Fresh Start on Wed, October 10th, because we have Maze coming in Oct 3rd and they will take up the whole service; the night is evangelistic and we will not have small groups. So, here's what it looks like:

Sundays @ 10:45, Oct 14-Nov 11, Room 204 and 201 (5 weeks):
-Can I be a Christian at School
-Why ...

Wednesdays starting Oct 10 (until we get into NRH first week of November):
-Drama @ 6:00pm (at NRH 5:30 pm)
-Fresh Start - separate class during access groups for 5 weeks

And because of the late start this is probably going to be the only round until next semester (2008)

AMPED Service 9.25.07 and 10.03.07

Hey Leaders! Thank you all for your prayers while I was sick! It's great to be back at work.

I just want to remind you all that we'll be having our leaders meeting this Wednesday in the choir room at 6:15p. We're going to be serving food again, so get there early to grab a bite to eat. As soon as we're done praying we need to get as many leaders to the lobby as possible to help facilitate the check-in/greeting process.

Also, next Wednesday, October 3 is our special service with guests, Maze. We'll need all hands on deck for this event because we will be combining with the Sr. High. I'll need to know as soon as possible if you will not be able to be there on Oct. 3. And remember that this night is our evangelical service, so let's encourage all our students to bring their friends!!

You guys are amazing!! I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!
Britt

Brittney

Brittney's been home (sick) for the last two days and I miss her. The doctor told her she needs to get some rest. Her Birthday is next Sat, the 29th. Send her a text and let her know how much she means to you. I'll let you all know that I think she's pretty cool. Feel better Britt.

Trigger videos

We won't show these at AMPED, but they are very powerful. Check em out. They may help you as you communicate with people.

October version 2.0

Okay kids, this entry concerns the opening of NRH. Push everything back a week so that puts us at checking out the campus as a leadership group the night of Oct. 28 and the first service with kids on Nov. 4.We may still have the soft opening on the 21st, but they are alittle worried about it so we are just planning this revised calender to make sure. Thanks for everything.

I need your thoughts

Okay, we usually do a de-briefing after an event so we can find out what went well and what did not. In this case, I would consider the retreat an event and since we are doing it again next year, I want it to be the best it can be. So I have my own thoughts on improving it but I want to hear from you. What was really great and what would you change. If there is something you would change do you have any thoughts on what would make it better? Email them to me and I will say your name three times here in the office.

Anticipated Thought Processes

here.

Video Podcast!

Okay, I tried to email this link but apparently Outlook doesn't like to use it. So I will put it here and hope all of you guys will check the podcast. Now the idea behind this is for Kam and I to video one of these about once a month or even twice a month but the main purpose is to keep the Parents of the students informed about what we are doing. Keep in mind it is our first and we will get better at it, but I'm pretty excited about it.

Hope you guys are checkin this blog out because I'm posting.

BTW, I heard Preston has a blog, see if you can find it.

Get at me.

October

Okay guys, here is the plan for October:

The series is called Distracted.
Oct. 3 - Maze will be here and we are having a combined service with the Sr. High downstairs.
Oct. 10 - Distracted: People - a look at how we get distracted from our family.
Oct. 17 - iStuff: how materialism takes our attention away from God.
Oct. 24 - Media: This will be a fun night as we expose the tricks used in media to capture our attention.

Now, those were all Wednesday nights. the NRH building will be ready the weekend of Oct. 20-21. So, instead of having a chaotic service on the 21st with the students and us trying to figure out what is where, we will have a leadership night (Oct. 21) at NRH and give all the adult leaders (no students) a walk thru and instruction on how everything works.

Then our official first AMPED Sunday night service at NRH will be Oct. 28.

Runaway 07 pt 2

Okay, some more pics for you from the retreat. Most of these I stole from Chase Morgan last night on Facebook.

Oh, and here's a bonus for you guys.

Runaway 07

Okay, so here I am at the table on Saturday night, some are looking over my shoulder as I type, at Willowood Ranch. Tomorrow we go home from a great leadership retreat. I must say I had a great time this weekend with my friends. I will put in a couple of pics and if you have any please send Britt a copy on cd or somethin.
well, the internet here is no bueno at the moment, so this is the only pic for now, but I will post some more.

updates

So I woke up this morning. 7 am. Just woke up. I have the day off and I can sleep in but noooo, I'm ready for the day so I got out of bed, paid my tithes and then some bills. Then I opened iTunes. They have had technical difficulties for the last couple of days and I haven't been able to get the video podcast set up with them. I got it submitted this morning. look for more info about this.

I hope you are ready for the retreat...

Oh, and one small piece of info for you ... our first Sunday at NRH is October 21st ... of this year! So that is the date we are advertising. I got the news yesterday and the Senior team is firm on that date. Woo hoo! So if you are going to the retreat this weekend you will hear about it there but if you are faithful to check on this blog, you will be ahead of the game and can brag to all your friends and be up on the 411.

AMPED U

I am totally stoked about our discipleship groups this fall: (trumpets blasting) ta da ta da! Here ye here ye! Announcing the Fall 2007 Line up of AMPED U! Okay, all the stupid stuff done.

Sundays @ 10:45 (middle service) Starting Sept 30 thru Oct 28 (five weeks)
  • Why - this class addresses major questions students have about the things we do as christians and at church but take for granted; ie. Why do we raise our hands? Why do we Baptise? Why do we speak in tongues? Etc. Led by me and Elizabeth.
  • Can I be a Christian at School - umm, well, kinda self explanatory. (the answer is a resounding YES) I am pretty sure this is led by Chase W. and Cambryn.

Those are the weekend classes. We will have a second round with different classes offered starting Nov 4 and goes five weeks.

Wednesdays @ 6:00 PM Starting Oct 3

  • Drama - our very own Brittney Nelson will lead this group and I am trying very hard not to call her the Drama Queen! She will begin sign up very soon. After we get into the new building at NRH Drama will be Sundays at 5:00 PM.

Wednesdays During Access Groups starting Oct 3

  • Fresh Start - a 5 week class for students that are new at this following Jesus thang. Led by Rich Tooley and Chris K.

Well there you are. Our first semester line up. I am encouraging you to get involved in one of the groups and see if its something you would like to help with in the future.

calling all geeks

hey can one of you computer savvy guys let me know how to tell people to set this up so that it sends an alert or email every time I update this?

stuff we need

Okay, so now that I'm gonna try my durndest to keep this thing up to date, let me tell you about a few things we need to do:

1. I have spoken to a core group of people about our follow up process; there is none. I would like to establish a process where we follow up with new students every Thursday. Examples are someone sending out cards thru the mail from the office here. Another is someone driving out to their house in the middle of the night (acting out fantasies of being the tooth fairy) and placing a sign in the yard of the new student that thanks them for attending AMPED. Or one suggestion I have had is that we can provide cards for you to fill out on Wed nights in your small group folder and we mail them out the next day but they have been hand written by you. Possibilities are endless but I want to hear from you. Send us an email and let us know what ideas you have or what you are willing to do to help out.

2. Leadership Dinner - do you remember when we had dinner at the McCall's house and it was worry free and everyone had a good time? I would love to do that again, but the sad part is I don't want to put it together and organize it here from the office. My dream is that someone will take this idea and run with it, having it at different people's houses each month and Brittney does not have to put it togehter. It literally becomes an informal small group where we can just all hang out together. All that being said, we will kinda have this atmosphere at the retreat, and then I am moving to Grapevine at the end of the month, so I would like to host Oct. at my house in Grapevine, wherever that might be. Details to come, but if you wanna see this continue pick up the ball and run.

3. We are starting small groups during the weekend services for our students: Drama and AMPED U. If you would like to help out with these let us know. We are also staring a group this next Wed night at the church for girls called "Father Wounds". Space is limited but if you know of a Jr High girl that belongs there let us know. We will also be starting a class shortly called "Fresh Start" and it is for new beleivers on Wed Nights. Tooley has more info on that one.

4. Student greeters on Wed nights. need I say more?

Okay, I'm out of ideas. Get at me.

a way to keep up?

so here it is, a test to see if this is the best way to keep up with everyone. We are starting new this week a video podcast but that is aimed at the parents to keep them involved. I have just been looking around lateley and the movers and shakers are blogging, so here we are. Check this spot regularly to see if there are any up to date changes.

"Changes?" you may say, ah yes, the ever changing calendar. Welcome to Student Ministry.

Are ya gettin ready for the retreat? Hope so.
